Mock Turtles
and Audits
Have any of you out there heard of the practice
of performing a mock audit? Don’t worry, it has
nothing to with Lewis Carroll's Mock Turtle
although it is just as nonsensical. Mind you if Elbert
County Government were a business in fear that
they were going to receive an unfavorable audit
from the IRS, they might want to pony up the cash
for one of these expensive test runs. Businesses
can ill afford a nervous department head spilling the
proverbial beans in front of the tax monster so they
give them a practice round or two to stiffen their
nerves.
But this is Elbert County , where budgets
are anemic and propped up. This is a
county government that won’t release even
appropriated monies that couldn’t be spent
on anything else but the department for
which they were allocated. Heck, if they
went around giving money to the
departments that are desperate for their
funds, the public might just see the mess
the current BOCC has crafted.
The budgetary practices of our county are just as
strange as anything that Lewis Carroll ever penned.
Sources say the Elbert County Department of
Social Services had a mock audit performed on
them. They need money, they don't need the
Commissioners wasting money. Mock audits? Can
we really afford these? Or is it that we have
something that the BOCC is fearful to expose and
so is willing to spend our hard earned tax dollars
on just so they won’t look like characters at the
mad hatter’s tea party.
